A high oblique view of the first siege of Casale Monferrato, 28 March 1628-16 March 1629. War of the Mantuan Succession (1628-31); part of the Thirty Years War (1618-48). Oriented with west to top.

The view shows the field fortifications, encampments and quarters of the besieging Spanish army. The towns of Pontestura (45°08ʹ33ʺN 08°20ʹ00ʺ) and Coniollo (Coniolo 45°08ʹ53ʺN 08°22ʹ15ʺE) are at the top (west) of the view, with Giorgio (San Giorgio 45°06ʹ28ʺN 08°24ʹ51ʺE) shown to the left (south) of Casale, and Frasine di Po (Frassineto Po 45°07ʹ58ʺN 08°32ʹ07ʺE) at the bottom (east). On the north bank of the Po the towns of Morano (Morano sul Po 45°09ʹ58ʺN 08°22ʹ00ʺE) and Villa noua (Villanova Monferrato 45°10ʹ52ʺN 08°28ʹ41ʺE) are shown.

  • Watermark: The letters IHS in circle

    Condition: two fold lines; surface is worn, thin, and broken in places; overall brown discolouration; printed from a scratched plate. One fold line to the mount which does not coincide with the print folds; no gilt edges. Verso: brown woodgrain patterning, as if the map had been previously pasted onto a wood backing, then removed. Pressure marks from the mounts of items which were kept above and below this print in a different collection are present on the recto and verso
