A system of reference squares, using upper and lower case letters, is engraved across the map. The map extends from Coblens (Koblenz 50°21ʹ13ʺN 07°34ʹ44ʺE) in the north to Vieux Brisach (Alt Breisach or Breisach am Rhein 48°01ʹ58ʺN 07°34ʹ59ʺE) in the south, and from Treves (Trier 49°45ʹ14ʺN 06°38ʹ21ʺE) in the west to Hailbron (Heilbronn 49°08ʹ24ʺN 09°13ʹ14ʺE) in the east.
