1746 or later

Pencil, pen, and ink on paper | Scale: not stated | RCIN 730081

A plan of the citadel of Savona, taken by the Imperial army, 18 December 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top.

The town of Savona had already been taken by the Austrians on 9 September; the citadel was taken after a siege of eighteen days in December. The positions of the batteries and their lines of fire during this siege are indicated. A dotted symbol is used to distinguish sandy areas. Another symbol represents the obstacles or barriers which were placed in some of the streets to prevent the enemy [i.e. the besieging army] from seeing what was going on in the town.
