War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

? CAROLINE FREDERICK SCOTT (ACTIVE 1726-D.1756)

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: not stated. 1:32,300 approx. | RCIN 730127

A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Alden Biesen, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top.

The attribution to Caroline Scott is made on stylistic grounds. The title appears to be written in a different hand. This is a very rough sketch showing the general disposition of the encampment in relation to surrounding settlements and to the route network. The rendering of the terrain, though sketchy in appearance, gives a quite faithful representation of the general lie of the land, especially in respect of the sunken approaches to the south-east of the castle of Alden-Biesen (the Commandery).

Condition: no fold lines; brown staining; corners rounded after being laid down on linen. Verso: induced discolouration and brown staining.
